I am a life-long resident of the Northwest and hold CPA licenses for both Washington and Oregon. With over 20 years of diverse financial experience and a commitment to the highest standards of service, I am prepared to help you achieve your financial goals.
I established JPGates, CPA, LLC in 2009, but I began my first business at age 17, when I opened and successfully operated my first martial arts school. My martial-arts training instilled in me the core principles of courtesy, integrity, and perseverance, which created the framework for my business ethic. In 1989, I earned a BS in Business Administration from Western Oregon University. Since then, I have gained a wide range of experience that includes auditing state agencies and programs, preparing financial statements and accounting policies for the State of Oregon, managing the finance and accounting team for a 700 FTE division of a Fortune 500 public company, teaching accounting, and working directly with clients at JPGates, CPA, LLC.
I have worked hard to build quality into the fabric of my firm, which has undergone two stringent systems of quality-control peer reviews and received “pass” ratings with no comments (i.e., no deficiencies) in each review. To keep current on constantly changing rules and regulations, I actively participate in industry-related organizations and seek continuing education relevant to today’s challenges. For example, beginning in August 2010, I had the opportunity to serve a two-year term as the Chair of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Financial Statement Review Committee, where I continue to participate as a member. In 2012, I taught college-level accounting classes at a local community college. Those experiences expanded my professional network and my ability to educate a wide variety of clients about complex financial matters. These ongoing efforts to maintain quality and keep current with the industry practices support the most rewarding aspects of my work: building relationships based on trust, professionalism, quality, and integrity with each of my clients and fostering their success.
My other passions in life include spending time with my wonderful family, friends and pet dog Mitzi. I also enjoy reading and mountain climbing. When I’m not with my family, my favorite place to be is on the top of a mountain somewhere in the Cascades. Some say mountain climbing doesn’t build character; it reveals it. I believe that it does both and that it has enriched my personal and professional life.
